Greenacres Memories

Residents at Greenacres care home stepped out last weekend to enjoy the annual Meltham Memories 1940’s extravaganza. The parade commenced its journey from Greenacres before going into Meltham Village and residents and guests got comfortable in the home’s gardens to watch.

The gardens were decorated for the event and resident’s waved their flags as the parade went by. Even the weather did not dampen the spirit of the day, with everyone enjoying the passing brass band, trucks, cars and veterans.

Sam McEwen, Home Manager at Greenacres, explained how residents had been preparing for the event for weeks. She said,

“The Meltham Memories weekend is a big event in the Greenacres’ calendar – we have been involved every year. We started getting in the mood on Friday with a 40’s afternoon, reminiscing about fashions, hairstyles and food from years gone by. We all went outside to enjoy the parade on Saturday then we had a 40’s tea in the evening. Events like this are great for our residents to reinforce their links with the community, which is so important to us all.”

Once the parade had passed by, residents ventured into the village to soak up the atmosphere and explore the stalls which had been set up. The 1940’s theme brought a chance to reminisce, with residents remembering the glamorous fashions of the period, but also recalling the frightening sound of an air raid siren, which could be heard from the local fire station, and the sounds from the Spitfire flypast. As the weekend also fell on the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, a wreath was laid to commemorate the thousands who lost their lives in the Great War.

Greenacres, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes, provides residential and dementia care for 64 residents and is committed to offering them aspirational lifestyle choices. The home is already an integral part of the community and is committed to bringing generations together. Breaking down the pre-conceived perceptions of care home life, their residents enjoy an active social environment with events, trips and daily activities on offer.
