Newfield Lodge Residents Have a ‘Whale of a Time’ at Seafood Restaurant

Residents at Newfield Lodge care home in Castleford enjoyed a traditional fish and chip evening as the home hosted a seafood pop-up restaurant called ‘Newfield Fisheries’. The bar area was decorated with a nautical theme to enhance the evening and staff dressed up as waiters to complete the restaurant experience.

Newfield Lodge, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes, understands the importance of nutrition within the care home environment and the pop-up restaurant is another step to ensure that the dining experience at the home is first class. For many residents, they will have celebrated special occasions by dining out throughout their life time, but now their needs have reached a point where getting out of the home to visit a restaurant is difficult. Residents are required to book a table prior to the evening and they can then enjoy an a la carte menu and receive full table service with families invited to dine with their relatives.

Newfield Lodge residents were keen for the restaurant to have a seafood theme, and they were welcomed with an aperitif and entertainment from local singer, Nigel Rae. They tucked into traditional fishy fayre such as cod, scampi and fishcakes, all served in newspaper with customary sides of mushy peas, gravy and of course, chips. Newfield Lodge resident, Doreen Shippen, booked a table for herself and her daughter at the pop-up restaurant, and both had a marvellous time, enjoying the food and quality time together. Doreen commented after the event that the food was amazing and she thanked Newfield Lodge staff for arranging the evening.

Paula Mountjoy, Home Manager at Newfield Lodge, explains the benefit of the pop up restaurant experience. She said:

“Newfield Fisheries was a great success at Newfield Lodge – the residents are still talking about it now. Some residents struggle at mealtimes and it was great to see that this experience completely transformed them for the evening. The staff loved it too, everyone got into the spirit of the event!”
