Lydgate Lodgecare home in Batley organised an Easter celebration to bring together the local community and give their residents’ a ‘cracking’ good time in the process. The open day last week featured an Easter Bonnet and Basket Parade where residents proudly showed-off their handmade Easter crafts.
Residents ofLydgate Lodgehad been busy creating their bonnets and baskets with the help of Lifestyle Manager, Colette Senior. With the fasting of Lent over, the tradition of making Easter bonnets originated as people were eager to wear new clothes and hats to mark a time for renewal, and many residents remember making bonnets in years gone by.
This is a tradition thatLydgate Lodge has been keen to uphold as reminiscence is a key part of their person-centred approach to care. As well as the Parade, the home organised a ‘Best Bonnet and Basket’ competition, an Easter raffle, an Easter Egg Hunt and handmade decorations for the event. Mrs Kathleen Appleyard, who has lived at Lydgate Lodge for seven years said, “Easter Sunday was always a time to get my best clothes on and go to church. I enjoy Easter as I remember going to Sunday school and making Easter bonnets. I had a great time at the Easter party with my friends and family and I enjoyed making the Easter basket.”
Colette said,“Easter is a great time to celebrate new beginnings, new friendships and have some fun in the process. We have really embraced this and resident’s and staff worked together to create the most amazing bonnets and baskets. There was even been a bit of rivalry once everyone found out about the competition, but Mary, Donald and Jean were worthy winners! We all had a great day topped off with some jolly entertainment from Rick Fry.”
