Bowbridge Court care home is providing a welcome boost to the Newark community by launching a lunch club for over 60s who live in the local area. The events are held every other Tuesday at the care home on Bowbridge Road and are free to attend.
The main aim for the lunches is to bring the community together in a bid to tackle loneliness and isolation, but since the launch of the events at the beginning of the year, the home has also found that they are helping to create new friendships and also to change preconceptions of care.
Garry Rawson who lives close by to Bowbridge Court was one of the first visitors to the Bowbridge Court lunch club: “I have to say I was sceptical of care homes, I thought they were sad and dull places but I was amazed and impressed at Bowbridge Court. It is such a fantastic place to live and it has definitely changed my view on care homes. Activities are numerous, and the atmosphere is excellent. The staff are very attentive and it is run like a family unit. The lunch club is great and the meals are of top quality – I think everyone should support their local care home!”.
Bowbridge Court Home Manager, Gaynor Smart-McCann, said:“Loneliness is a huge issue in the community, especially for the older population, and we wanted to provide a safe and comfortable place for people to meet and enjoy a meal. It’s just our way of giving something back to the community and gives people something to look forward to - our residents get excited about welcoming the guests too. We are finding already that the lunches are providing a base for people to organise other activities, and we are hoping to develop them to gardening clubs in the summer and possibly utilising our cinema room for a film club. The opportunities are endless but at the end of the day, there is nothing better than enjoying spending time with old and new friends!”.
The next lunch club is due to be held on 5thMarch 2019 and every other Tuesday thereafter. Local over 60s are welcome to attend to meet new people and enjoy a freshly cooked two course lunch followed by entertainment. Places are limited so booking is required on 01636 605 528 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
