De Brook Lodge enjoying new partnership with Cycling Without Age Trafford
Residents at an Urmston care home are enjoying regular rides in specially adapted three-wheel bicycles thanks to a new partnership with not-for-profit social enterprise, Cycling Without Age Trafford (CWA).
De Brook Lodge, which offers 24-hour residential and dementia care for 52 people, has teamed up with the volunteer-run organisation to offer its residents the chance to enjoy the thrill of the open road and the opportunity to see their local area from specially adapted three-wheel ‘trishaws’.
CWA, which was originally established in Denmark in 2012, and is now based in Trafford, aims to increase recreational mobility amongst older people. Passengers sit in a specially adapted cab at the front of each electric cycle and are given guided tours of their home towns and villages by fully-trained “pilots”.
Danielle Aikenhead, De Brook Lodge’s lifestyle manager, said: “Cycling Without Age is a wonderful initiative that really helps our residents get out and about, enabling them to enjoy the sights and sounds of our community. For many, it also offers a chance to reminisce about how Urmston and its surroundings might have changed over the years. They absolutely love travelling in such style – it’s warm and cosy and promotes genuine benefits to their health and wellbeing. One lady who lives with us said she felt like the Queen!”
“Cycling Without Age Trafford is run by the most proactive, kind and compassionate team of volunteers and we are thrilled to be able to work with them.”
CWA Chapter Co-Captain, Kate Elliott, commented: “It gives us tremendous pleasure to see how much residents from De Brook Lodge enjoy their trishaw rides. As an organisation, we want to empower our older citizens to enjoy the world around them and to help them remain an active part of society. Age should be no barrier to experiencing the pleasures afforded by a simple bike ride. People can feel the wind in their hair again and share their experiences of their town or village over the years. It’s the perfect place to tell stories and listen to others and helps to build bridges between the generations.”
De Brook Lodge, which is part of the Ideal Carehomes family, is situated on Irlam Road. It boasts a hair salon, spacious lounges and landscaped gardens for residents to enjoy.
