Clara Smith, a resident at Ashworth Grange care home in Dewsbury, has celebrated her 100thbirthday this week, marking the occasion with a visit from The Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, and also some feathered friends.
With a love for the great outdoors and birds, the birthday girl made a special wish to staff for her favourite owls to visit. Her wish was granted and local business, Wise Owls, brought various owls and birds for Clara to meet.
Colette Senior, Lifestyle Manager at Ashworth Grange, said: “We wanted to create some lovely memories for Clara on her special birthday and knew that she had a passion for nature. Clara has fond memories of strolling around local fields with her son, enjoying the wildlife and hopping over stiles, even at 70 years of age, so we were thrilled to be able to grant her wish of bringing a little nature to her room. It was such a joy to see her smiling and enjoying the owls and birds. Happy birthday Clara from everyone at Ashworth Grange!”
Clara, who was born in Morley, was joined by her family and friends for the special celebration, which saw The Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees delivering her card from the Queen.
Clara, who has three children, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, said: “With such a large family, I’ve spent a lot of time outside amongst nature, playing with my children and taking my dogs for walks in the local countryside. I really miss those long strolls in the great outdoors so it was wonderful to have the owls and birds visit me at home. It’s made my birthday really special and I cannot thank the staff enough.”
