Nancy Danson, a resident at De Brook Lodge care home in Urmston, marked her 100th birthday in style earlier this week, with a visit from the Mayor and a whopping 140 cards to open.
Last week, staff from the home called on the local community to help them celebrate Nancy’s milestone birthday by collecting 100 cards in time for her celebrations. The home was inundated over the weekend, taking the total cards received from 50 to 140 in just three days.
Nancy, who was born in Warrington and moved to Flixton when she married in her 20s, was joined by her family and friends for a special party, which saw the Mayor of Trafford visit to deliver her card from the Queen.
Nancy has been a part of the local community for over 80 years, raising her four sons in the area and attending the local church, Hayeswater Methodist. She started her career in healthcare, nursing at Trafford General Hospital and later went on to work at Metropolitan Vickers. She moved in to De Brook Lodge in 2018 and has continued to enjoy her hobbies including watching her favourite classic films in the home’s cinema room.
Nancy said: “I have had such a wonderful birthday celebration and was overwhelmed to be presented with so many cards, including one from Her Majesty, hand delivered by our Mayor. I can’t quite believe I’m 100 – I still feel young at heart and very lucky that I’m still able to enjoy the lifestyle I had before I moved into De Brook Lodge. I’ve made some fantastic friends here and it was such a joy to celebrate with them this week. Thanks to everyone who made it so special.” Nancy went on to reveal that the secret to a long and happy life is keeping busy.
Danielle Aikenhead, De Brook Lodge lifestyle manager, said:“It was so lovely to see Nancy having such a wonderful birthday with her friends and family. We were overwhelmed with the response to our birthday card appeal and it was a privilege to present Nancy with all the amazing messages on the big day.”
The Mayor of Trafford Councillor Rob Chilton added:“To be able to visit Trafford residents who have reached their centenary is one of the most pleasant duties of being Mayor. I am delighted to wish Nancy a very happy birthday, and very much hope she enjoys a pleasant day with her family and friends, celebrating a long life.”
