Care home residents invite local people to join them for free weekly coffee morning
Ashworth Grange care home, based on Ashworth Green in Dewsbury, held its first community coffee morning of 2020 last week.
The regular event has been relaunched after the café was refurbished late last year and provides Ashworth Grange residents with an opportunity to meet and socialise with new people from the community. Local older people are welcome to attend the free weekly event to meet like-minded people and enjoy delicious home-made cakes. The café has a piano for regular sing-songs and there is also a newly renovated ‘social lounge’ at the home which is more focussed towards the gentleman with a pool table, large TV and board games.
Following the successful turnout for the first coffee morning, Ashworth Grange’s Lifestyle Manager, Collette Senior, created topical conversation cards to further increase interactions at the events. Cards are placed on all the tables to work as conversation starters between residents and guests with the aim of finding out interesting facts about each other.
Resident Bill Atkinson, who has lived at Ashworth Grange for a year said: ‘I really enjoyed the coffee morning. It’s great to meet new people, I have made a new friend today and I hope to see them again next week. I used to always enjoy going out and about but this suits me because I get to enjoy all the aspects of going out to a coffee shop… but now I get to keep my slippers on!’.
Cheryl Green, Home Manager, said: ‘The refurbishment of the café has created such a buzz throughout the home and we have had a great response from residents, families and the wider community. I think it is hugely important for us to extend the hand of friendship over to the local community who may find themselves looking to meet new friends, reconnect with old friends or combat loneliness themselves.
Family member and visitor, Linda Norgate, said: ‘This weekly coffee morning is fantastic. It’s great to have these facilities on site so we can still enjoy all the luxuries of a coffee shop but in the comfort of the home. It is lovely to spend quality time with mum, plus I enjoy getting to meet other family members as this gives us all a chance to discuss upcoming trips and activities’.
The weekly coffee mornings are held every Wednesday between 11am – 12pm. If you or somebody you know would be interested in joining this free event, please contact 01924 869 970.
Ashworth Grange is also offering the space to local businesses to host small meetings and events free of charge.
