Staff have arranged lots of activities for their residents to take part in throughout the day, including a two-minute silence to remember the declaration of victory and commemorate the end of World War II in Europe. Residents will have the opportunity to re-watch Sir Winston Churchill’s victory speech before hosting a 1940’s style afternoon tea party at 4 pm when everyone will join in with a rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ live on Facebook. Ideal Carehomes is encouraging all families and friends to tune in and sing along with residents.
In the lead up to the 75th anniversary, residents have been reminiscing about the celebrations back in 1945 and Hambleton Grange resident, Gerry Murray, said, ‘I remember VE Day well. When we were told the war had ended everybody was so happy, people were hugging one another and dancing in the street! The main thing I remember was that everyone came outside to be together and celebrate’.
‘I think it is fantastic that Ideal Carehomes are using modern-day technology to help us recreate that feeling of togetherness with our friends and families. I cannot wait to give a big wave to my family who will be watching to let them know I am ok but missing them lots’.
Stacey Linn, Director at Ideal Carehomes, said, ‘Many people have likened the current pandemic to certain war experiences and we often look to the older and wiser generation to learn from them and their experiences. We wanted to ensure our residents were able to celebrate with the help of their friends and families to show their respects and pay tribute during this monumental event’.
