Diana Lytle has celebrated her centenary birthday at Greenacres care home in Huddersfield. Staff at the homemade sure that Diana enjoyed a special day despite their original party plans being cancelled due to the coronavirus isolation guidelines.
With the sun shining, Diana enjoyed a picnic-style afternoon tea with some of her closest friends from the Meltham care home in the landscaped gardens, including finger sandwiches, fresh cream cakes and even a glass of fizz to toast the birthday girl.
Care Assistant Elaine Richmond then surprised the group with an outdoor concert as she performed classic songs loved by the residents and of course, a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ for Diana. Deliveries of flowers, balloons, presents and cards including a special card from the Queen filled Diana's room as she enjoyed Facetime calls with her family and friends.
Born in 1920, Diana and her two sisters were raised in the countryside on a farm the family inherited from her Grandfather. Diana enjoyed life on the farm, where they reared livestock and poultry. . Diana’s mother, Bertha Mason, was a stay at home mum who enjoyed teaching her daughters how to make their own clothes and Diana’s father, William Lytle, served in the army as a Major throughout the war.
Diana’s dream was always to work with children, and this became a reality after she studied childcare at college and began working as a nanny to wealthy families when the war began. Diana assisted with the children’s education and in return, the family ensured that rationing was never a worry for Diana.
Diana believes there is no secret to living a long life however, she says leading a healthy lifestyle and spending time enjoying the fresh air of the countryside helps her to feel fit and content.
