Fairway View’s Love Birds Celebrate 65 years Together

Published: Wednesday 13th May 2020

Arthur and Sheila Parker v1 1
A married couple from Bulwell care home, Fairway View, have celebrated 65 years since their first meeting and have offered advice to young couples on their lasting relationship saying that ‘communication is key’.   Arthur and Sheila Parker marked the occasion with a surprise intimate dinner served in the vintage tearoom which was decorated with balloons, banners and fresh flowers. It was a double celebration as the date also coincides with their 63rd wedding anniversary.

The pair enjoyed their favourite foods cooked by the home’s Chef and were waited on by Fairway View’s Caretaker, Jonathan Almond, who was dressed for the occasion in a full tuxedo. The care team served the love birds a three-course meal including some of their favourite dishes: Salmon with roasted Mediterranean vegetables and a sharing platter of puddings. Arthur said, ‘We love to get different puddings to share and have a mouthful of each!’. The pair also enjoyed a glass of their favourite tipple, Gin and Tonic for Arthur and a glass of rosé wine for Sheila.

To add to the fairy-tale setting of the evening, Fairway View’s ‘Sunshine Singers Choir’ performed the couples favourite songs by artist, Andre Rieu.

The pair reminisced on their ‘perfect’ first date when they ‘clicked instantly’ after meeting at Victoria Ball Room in Nottingham on the 1st of April 1955  spending the whole evening dancing and singing.

After courting for two years, Arthur popped the question and the couple tied the knot on the 11th of May 1957 at Shakespeare Street register office. Sheila recalls how she felt on her wedding day: ‘Lots of brides are often very nervous on their wedding day, but that wasn’t my experience, I simply couldn’t wait to say, ‘I do’!’.

The pair share two children, Christopher and Wendy, who have given the couple two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. They believe family is incredibly important and spent much of their free time on caravan holidays across the UK.

The couple, who are described by care staff as inseparable, are used to spending all their time together, both throughout their home life and working life.  They both share a passion for the outdoors, working as scout and girl guide leaders and Arthur called upon his wife for support during his time working as the manager of a local youth band named ‘The City of Nottingham Drum and Bugle Cor’. Shelia helped to design and create over 80 band uniforms for their gigs, including a very memorable performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

The couple are extremely grateful to the Fairway View staff who made this celebration even more special, Sheila said, ‘I simply couldn’t ask for more, everyone has been incredibly thoughtful.  Our date was wonderful, from the music to the food and all the details in between – I can’t thank them enough for what they did’

Arthur adds, ‘We have had such an incredible time celebrating our Anniversary, the team at Fairway view really have worked hard to put this meal together for us and it just shows how much they are willing to do for their residents’.

‘I believe we have been so successful in our marriage because we have always worked as a team and made sure to speak to each other with respect. I think that the younger generation should remember you should always talk to your partner how you would like them to talk to you’.

Dorothy Mbulo, Home Manager at Fairway View, said, ‘Arthur and Sheila are such a pleasure to be around and have a fantastic relationship. I am always keen to hear their stories from over the years and often listen to their wise words of advice – from everyone at Ideal Carehomes I would like to wish them both a very happy anniversary’.
