Residents at Bowbridge Court
care home in Newark have been reunited with their families and friends following an idea from the care team to host a ‘virtual’ afternoon tea party. Staff are so keen to keep residents in touch with their loved ones and know how much afternoon tea events were enjoyed with families so Home Manager, Claire Gordon-Rundle, created the ‘virtual’ vintage afternoon tea themed pop up café to recreate past events. Residents were able to use technology to see and chat to their loved ones whilst they tucked into homemade sandwiches, sweet treats and pastries.
94 year old resident, Frank Cavander, spent quality time with his daughter and son in-law over Facetime with the help of care home staff. Frank said, ‘I have had a wonderful conversation with my daughter and her husband this afternoon, it was great to be able to see them on the screen whilst we were talking – it was like they were sat right next to me! We chatted about everything we have been up to over the past few weeks and it made it even more special to have afternoon tea at the same time.’
Frank’s daughter, Linda Lawrence, said, ‘It was so thoughtful of the team to put this together the afternoon tea with my dad has been the highlight of my week. Unbeknownst to the team, the following day was my birthday, so being able to spend quality time catching up with my dad was the best gift I could have received!’.
Following the success of the afternoon tea party Facetime calls, the home have decided to make it a regular event.
Activities Co-coordinator, Bethany Davidson, who helped to make the afternoon a success said, 'It has been my absolute pleasure to help to arrange this afternoon tea for Frank and his family. It was wonderful to see how much the call boosted his mood and made him smile - I look forward to helping more families to connect each week!'.
Home Manager, Claire, said, ‘We have had a very special afternoon, our residents loved it and the feedback we have had from their relatives has been incredibly positive. It is great to see how many people wanted to take part and I am very excited to continue this virtual dining experience each week. It is important to me to be able to help our residents to stay connected with their loved ones during this uncertain time and we are always thinking of unique ways to do this’.
