Residents and staff at Handley House care home have been celebrating the home’s first birthday after opening its doors in May 2019.
Named after the Handley Page RAF aircraft repair site in York on which it sits, Handley House on Green Lane in Clifton, provides residential care for 66 residents and in the past year has created over 50 jobs for people in the local area.
The home has welcomed many special guests since opening its doors including, York's Lord Mayor, Councillor Keith Orrell and Lady Mayoress, Judith Orrell, who planted a commemorative blossom tree during a ‘topping out’ ceremony and former Minister of State for Care, Caroline Dinenage MP who met with staff and residents during the 2019 Care Home Open Day. Most recently, TOWIE star James ‘Arg’ Argent made a surprise visit after Home Manager, Rachel McNally, was voted a finalist in the regional Great British Care Awards.
As well as the Great British Care award for Rachel, Handley House triumphed during their first year after being awarded ‘Top 20 Care Home in Yorkshire and the Humber’ by leading comparison website, carehome.co.uk, following their impressive resident and relative review score of 9.9/10.
To mark the successes of their first year at Handley House, residents have been sharing messages of thanks and gratitude to staff.
91 year old resident, Pauline Day, said, ‘I was one of the first residents to move into Handley House and I am extremely proud of all of the staff for everything they have accomplished. I am very proud of them for achieving a ‘Top 20’ care home award, they absolutely deserve it! The team have given me a place to call home and I cannot thank them enough for everything they do for me’.
Sandra Dickinson, who has lived at Handley House for nine months, said, ‘I am very thankful to the staff at Handley House for everything that they do. Since moving into the home in, everybody has been so kind and compassionate, I am very proud to live here’.
The team at Handley House have actively worked to raise funds for charities and organisations close to their hearts, including a 6K memory walk for Alzheimer’s UK and a ‘Waxathon’ to raise money for York District Hospital during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Caretaker, Shaun Smith, who has been heavily involved in the homes fundraising, said, ‘I am very proud of our team at Handley for all the wonderful fundraising ideas and activities we have taken part in over the past year. It has been great to see how much our residents and relatives have got behind us and donated; I think we have created a wonderful community spirit together’.
Home Manager, Rachel McNally, who has worked in the care industry for 14 years, said, ‘It has been a real honour to commission Handley House. I am very proud of all of my staff, they are positive, compassionate and thrive on making a difference to the lives of our residents and that is hugely reflected in how much they go above and beyond to put smiles on our residents faces. When I reflect on our achievements within our first year, I feel such joy and I cannot wait to see what we can achieve over our second year in business!’.
