Brinnington Hall care home resident Dorothy Cox has been reunited with her husband for the first time in weeks for a surprise date on their 49th wedding anniversary.  The couple had been separated due to the pandemic but thoughtful staff at the home wanted to make sure they could celebrate their milestone anniversary together.

The care team had invited Dorothy’s husband, David, for a socially distanced outdoor visit, however to his amazement, when he arrived there was a private, afternoon tea for two set up for him and Dorothy to celebrate the special occasion. Staff had cleverly arranged a beautifully decorated table to ensure that although government guidelines were adhered to throughout, Dorothy and David felt like they were enjoying an intimate meal for two.

During their date, the couple were serenaded with their favourite love songs by a local singer with his acoustic guitar in the homes garden, at a safe distance.

The pair met when Dorothy was 23 and David was 20 and have been smitten with one another ever since. They discovered they had lots of things in common including a love for music and dancing, which was the inspiration behind their first date, to Blackpool Mecca Dance Hall where the duo danced and laughed together until their feet hurt!

In 1969, following a trip to their favourite restaurant with Dorothy’s parents, David felt the time was right and ‘popped the question’, to which Dorothy excitedly agreed. The couple tied the knot in front of their friends and families in 1971 at Broughton Parish Church. Dorothy describes the day as ‘one of the best days of her life’, to which David adds ‘We are a perfect match, so I knew it was for keeps from day one and here we are all these years later’.

Dorothy and David share two children and two grandchildren and during their afternoon tea, the couple were delighted to hear the news that they are to expect another grandchild later this year.

David Cox, said, ‘The staff at Brinnington Hall are brilliant, the afternoon tea was such a wonderful surprise – I thought I was just coming to have a quick five minute social distanced chat, little did I know what the team had planned!’.

74 year-old, Dorothy Cox, said, ‘I have been completely overwhelmed by how much effort the team have put into making this day so special for us. We have been spoilt rotten - the food, entertainment and of course the company was wonderful!’.

Home Manager, Rachel McIntosh, said, ‘I am delighted to see how much our little afternoon tea meant to Dorothy and her husband. Being able to go the extra mile for our residents is an incredibly rewarding feeling and I am very pleased to have been a part in their milestone anniversary!’.
