York care home, Ebor
Court, has been crowned the North Yorkshire Regional Winner of Ideal Carehomes’ annual ‘Gardens in Bloom’ competition.
The contest, which launched in June, encouraged both staff and residents to work together to embrace their love of the great outdoors by devising and implementing an exciting revamp for their outdoor spaces that everybody can enjoy during the summer months.
Residents and staff joined forces to upcycle their current garden furniture and make lots of small but impactful changes and upgrades. The theme was decided during a monthly resident's meeting and after the York home claimed the regional title for their gardening efforts in the 2019 ‘Gardens in Bloom’ competition, they looked to upcycle, modify and improve some of their favourite existing features. The seating area was given a modernising revamp as residents helped to sand and repaint the wooden furniture, restored beloved garden ornaments and added fun new features such as fairy lights to create a serene space for everyone to enjoy the UK’s warm weather.
The homes raised bed vegetable patch gained some new and exciting winter root vegetables to grow along with an extension of the range of herbs. Residents also wanted to include lots of brightly coloured sensory flower beds, by not only using brightly coloured flowers but also plants with distinctive smells such as calming lavender.
‘Head gardener’ 86-year-old Resident, June Falkingham, said, ‘I am so proud of how the garden areas turned out. We had so much fun creating such relaxing, yet fun spaces and we are already thinking of other ideas to add before the national judging!’
Home Manager, Shane Talbot, said, ‘We are absolutely thrilled to be crowned the regional North Yorkshire winner - All of the credit must go to our amazing residents who embraced the competition with such gusto. We are extremely grateful to have had such overwhelming support from our residents families and our staff team that generously donated to our garden project. It really has been a labour of love and were so glad to see the judges were as thrilled with our garden creation as we are!’
Stacey Linn, Ideal Carehomes’ Director, said, ‘Our wonderful team and residents at Ebor Court should be very proud to be our North Yorkshire winner. Our judges were astonished at just how much effort and thought had clearly gone into their project and how much our residents families and friends rallied together to bring plans to life. We know that our residents take huge pride in their garden areas and we hope that the warm weather continues so that they can enjoy the fruits of their labour even more!’
The home now enters the final round of the competition, whereby Ideal Carehomes panel of judges will visit all regional winners in four weeks’ time to decide upon a national victor.
