Handley House care home in York operated by Ideal Carehomes, have received an overall rating of ‘GOOD’ following their first-ever inspection by the regulatory body, the Care Quality Commission (‘CQC’). The home, which opened in 2019 has hit the spot in all five areas of care: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Staff at the home on Green Lane in Clifton were highly praised, as relatives told the CQC that Handley House ‘is a caring environment where residents are real people for carers, not a job’.
During the inspection which took place last month, inspectors observed day to day life at the home and examined paperwork, policies and care plans. They spoke to several members of staff as well as five residents and relatives from the home to gather a full picture prior to compiling the complimentary report.
The inspectors were impressed with the care teams commitment to ensuring their resident's safety throughout the coronavirus pandemic, noting their dedication to testing, infection control, PPE and training whilst also mentioning how they have worked together to support one another over the last few months. Residents’ loved ones were quoted throughout the report with one family member stating, ‘Staff at Handley House are very caring, kind and polite. They always smile a lot and look happy at their work’. Another relative told inspectors, ‘Staff have a lot of patience and respect. My relative loves them and you can see how devoted the team are which is comforting for us’.
In direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the care team successfully implemented the unique ‘Ideal Fresh Living’ initiative which sees the care team being at the forefront of infection control and hygiene policies. The report cited ‘Robust measures had been put in place in response to the coronavirus pandemic and staff wore personal protective equipment. Safe visiting arrangements were in place and being kept under review in response to local and national guidance and the home environment was clean and well-maintained’.
The constant theme running through the report shows that residents and staff feel happy and empowered. Residents are ‘supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives’ and staff told the inspector that they are ‘motivated and enjoyed their work’. The culture embedded at Handley House was seen to be ‘person-centred and empowering, achieving good outcomes for residents’. Residents families also supported this, commenting, ‘I would recommend this place because it's a secure and safe environment, with residents very much in the centre of everything they do’.
Inspectors picked up on the positive atmosphere in the home and commented on how staff effectively implemented Ideal Carehomes’ #thisisme initiative, which sees staff taking the time to learn more about their residents personal lives, likes/dislikes, hobbies and interests. This in turn, helps them to organise a tailored, person-centred, daily activities programme that the residents can enjoy.
The report states, ‘Information about people's life histories was used to help inform ideas for activities, residents care and to stimulate conversations. People took part in a range of activities, where they wished to. This included crafts, entertainers, chair aerobics, tea parties and themed days. The service even has pet rabbits and some people particularly enjoyed helping to care for them’.
Home Manager, Rachel McNally, said, ‘it is a hugely proud moment to receive this report and the ‘GOOD’ rating across the board. To have been with Handley House from day one and to see our ‘house’ become a ‘home’ with the stamp of approval from the CQC means so much to both myself and my team. I know this news will really give a boost to everyone at the home who have been giving so much to our residents since the start of the pandemic’.
Regional Director, Lisa Harding, said, ‘Rachel and everyone in the Handley team do a great job of caring for our residents and I continuously see how they go above and beyond to make our home a wonderfully caring place to live. – Congratulations to everyone involved, this truly is very ‘GOOD’ news!’.
