Staff at Mountview care home in Leicester have been celebrating the special achievements of 84 year old resident, Barbara Wood, who has taken her first solo steps since having a stroke earlier this year.
With support from the dedicated Mountview team and the Community Integrated Neurology Stroke Service (CINSS), Barbara was able to strengthen her legs through daily targeted exercises, arm chair aerobics and physiotherapy in order to take her first steps to recovery with only her walking frame as an aid earlier this week.
Barbara was born in Manchester in 1935 and was the oldest of her three siblings. Despite attending school during The Blitz, Barbara has fond memories of her childhood and recalls joining a school hiking and climbing club – her passion for walking through nature and being out in the fresh air was something that stuck with Barbara throughout her life. It was her love for mountaineering that led her to meet husband, Derek, who she met though her hiking club. The couple hit it off and married the following year before welcoming their first born son, Alan.
Barbara said, ‘It has been a difficult road to recovery, but it has been worth it now I have finally managed my first steps with my walking frame. The staff at Mountview have been there for me the entire time. The team really spurred me on and pushed me to continue and the results really speak for themselves. Their smiling faces and warm hearts have been instrumental to getting me back up and moving again! Thank you so much to everyone who helped me, I can’t express how much I appreciate it’.
Senior Carer, Sonya Collis-Smith, said, ‘Working with Barbara since she joined us in April has been my absolute pleasure. She is a fantastic lady and really does have a heart of gold. To be able to support her over the past few months to gain her strength to take her first unassisted steps has been extremely rewarding. I am so pleased to see how far we have come, and I look forward to accomplishing our next recovery milestones!’.
Registered Home Manager, Stacie Weaver, said, ‘I am delighted to see just how much progress Barbera is making with us - It was a very emotional moment watching her take those first few independent steps. I am very proud of Barbara and also my team and everything they do for our residents.
