Staff at De Brook Lodge care home in Urmston have pulled together to make sure residents don’t miss out on their favourite Yuletide events by creating and performing their very own festive pantomime.
Ideas for the theme were discussed in their monthly committee meeting and residents voted for the staff to re-enact classic fairy-tale, ‘Cinderella’. The team spent weeks preparing and rehearsing, even adapting the script to include jokes and humorous references tailored to their audience.
The care home’s performance was made even more special by contributions from residents and the local community: residents were enlisted to design costumes and paint backdrops and they created their own personalised crowns to wear whilst watching the show. The home were given a large pumpkin and Cinderella’s sparkly dress by members of their local community and theatre group, Urmston Musical Theatre, and students at Flixton Girls School gifted a handmade cape for the Fairy Godmother to wear.
Lifestyle Manager, Danielle Aikenhead, said,‘Usually at Christmas time our home would be a social hub for our community to visit and host Christmas themed events. We wanted this year to be no different and so we began brain storming ideas on how to bring the festivities to our residents in a Covid secure way.
We had a wonderful afternoon putting on our show! Our audience were incredible and got really involved throughout the performance which was great to see. I think we achieved our mission of spreading Christmas joy throughout our home and thanks to some lovely donations, Cinderella was able to go to the ball!’.
Resident, Kath Maitland, said, ‘The show was marvellous! The staff did a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life. Cinderella is one of my favourite pantomimes and this year the story is turning 70 so what a great way to celebrate that with our own version of the story. It is a shame to not be able to have local schools visit for nativities and pantomimes but the team really made it up for it!’.
