RAF Veteran Overwhelmed as Care Team Surprise Him with Cushion Honouring His Late Wife

Published: Friday 5th February 2021

Eric Kent, who was one of the first residents to move into brand new care home, Launton Grange, has been sleeping with a photograph of his beloved wife, Maureen, each night since she passed. When carers at his new home in Bicester learnt this, they began thinking of ways to put a smile on Eric's face. The team had the brilliant idea to put a photo of his wife’s face on a pillow to give to Eric to sleep with instead.

Eric met his wife Maureen at a local dance hall – initially he did not want to attend the disco that evening but he is now glad he decided to go! Maureen’s friends encouraged the pair to dance, and they hit it off instantly, with Eric confessing he knew then that she was ‘the one’. Eric and Maureen got married in 1947 and spent 73 happy years together.

Eric said, ‘The cushion from the care team was the best present I have ever received, I love it! It was the best decision I’ve ever made moving here. I have friends around me all the time and I have help with anything I need when I ring my bell’

Yesterday, as part of Eric’s 91st birthday celebrations, the team presented him with the pillow, videoing him opening it which has since gone viral on Facebook as people watch the emotional moment.
One comment read, ‘This is absolutely brilliant, well-done everybody, what a lovely gesture!’. Another said, ‘What a lovely present, you can tell he misses Maureen so much'.

Eric’s daughter, Marilyn, said, ‘It was really emotional for me and my sisters to watch dad receive his cushion on Facebook, we were all really touched by the gesture from the staff. We are so pleased to know our dad is living at a care home with such a thoughtful team’.

Everyone at the home was delighted that the present meant to so much to Eric. Regional Director, Maria Taylor, said, ‘Eric was one of our first residents here at Launton Grange, he is a wonderful man and his love for his wife is evident. Eric always carries a small paperweight during the day containing some of Maureen’s ashes so that they are still together so we knew the pillow would be a big hit with him and something he can hold at night. It made our whole team very emotional when we presented Eric with his gift and knowing it made him so happy was completely worth it!’.
