Littleton Lodge care home, situated on Bishop Street in Hednesford and operated by Ideal Carehomes, held its official open day at the weekend and received a very warm welcome from local miners who worked at the infamous Littleton Colliery which closed in 1993.

Alan Piers, a former miner and member of the local Miners Association, attended the open day bearing a touching housewarming gift. He presented Home Manager, Rachel Ellis, with the Davy lamp that was issued to him when he began working in the Littleton mines over 60years ago.

Rachel said, ‘The response from the local mining community has been overwhelming and a true testament to the heritage of our home, which has been aptly named in honour of the Colliery. I am very grateful to Alan and the community for their many gifts – they are all taking pride of place in our home for everyone to see and appreciate’.

The team have been overwhelmed with the gifts they have received from the welcoming Cannock community including commemorative plates from former miners, a handmade coal Davy lamp and several books on the history of the Colliery which have been added to the extensive library at the home. As a token of their gratitude, the Littleton Lodge team are looking forward to hosting monthly miner’s lunches once restrictions allow.

Saturday marked the public preview day for Littleton Lodge where local people were able to get their first glimpse of the luxurious care home which has been under construction for nearly a year. Throughout the day, nearly 100 local people visited the home, adhering to current government guidelines, including Councillor Emma Honeyball and Councillor Sharon Jaeger who were delighted to meet the team. Cllr Sharon Jaeger, said, ‘I had such a friendly welcome from everyone at the open day and the tour around the building was really informative. The soft pastel colours and spacious corridors give the whole place such an atmosphere of tranquillity. The views overlooking Hednesford Hills and farther afield are quite spectacular! I'm really looking forward to joining residents in activities plus an afternoon tea or even a evening cocktail or two in the top floor sky bar!'

Home Manager, Rachel Ellis, said, ‘I am thrilled our preview day was such a success, it was a pleasure to meet so many wonderful people and learn more about the history of the mines. I look forward to welcoming our first residents - assisting them to live the next chapter of their lives to the fullest!’.

The state-of-the-art home is set to welcome new residents for short and long term placements in the coming weeks and has a host of first class facilities including a luxurious Sky Bar, vintage tearoom complete with balcony area, beauty parlour and a plush cinema room.
