Wakefield care staff help homeless youths

Care staff from Hepworth House care home in Wakefield will Sleep Out next week to raise funds for youth homeless charity, Centrepoint.

Care assistant Carmel Lawson, from Stanley, and activities co-ordinator Helen Brady, from Normanton, will swap their beds for sleeping bags on Thursday 18thNovember and will spend the night sleeping rough at Westgate Retail Park in Wakefield.

Hepworth House, operated by Ideal Carehomes, is a residential and dementia care home boasting a hair salon and café. Carmel and Helen have worked at Hepworth House, on City Field Court in Stanley, since it opened in June 2021.

Centrepoint is encouraging people up and down the country to hold their own sponsored Sleep Out between 18th and 21stNovember to raise awareness and give participants an idea of the situation a lot of young people find themselves in, while also supporting those who face this as a reality.

Carmel said: “Too many young people don’t have the security of a roof over their heads or a family to go home to and the pandemic has only made this worse. By holding our own Sleep Out for Centrepoint, we can hopefully do something that will make a difference to so many vulnerable young people.

Helen added: “When Carmel first told me about the Sleep Out, I thought it was a fabulous idea and a really meaningful way to help others. We know the devastating impact the pandemic has had on so many families and we feel very lucky to have got through it with ours and our families’ heath intact. I am very nervous about the Sleep Out but it will be worth it!”

Home manager, Lynn Robinson, commented: “We are all very proud of Carmel and Helen for taking on this challenge and we wish them all the best for their Sleep Out. Please show them your support by sponsoring them.”
