Ashworth Grange Launches Super Scarecrow Community Competition

Residents at Ashworth Grange care home in Dewsbury are launching a ‘Super Scarecrow’ community contest this spring which will be displayed in the care homes entrance to put smiles on the faces of passers-by.

Staff and residents are asking local people to create their own scarecrows, with an ‘anything goes’ theme encouraging each design to be as fun or whacky as the designer would like.

The competition is open to all ages, and currently many local schools, nurseries, businesses and even emergency services teams have created some wild and wonderful scarecrows for the display. The Mayor of Kirklees, Nigel Patrick, was delighted to hear about the contest and was thrilled to be asked to judge the top three winners on the 3rd of June.

Lifestyle Manager and driving force for the ‘Super Scarecrow’ initiative, Colette Senior, hopes that the Scarecrows will bring joy to the residents and help to kick start their summer garden renovations. She said, ‘It is more important now than ever to get into the community together to spread joy, and this is such a nice activity to do at home with the kiddies. Our team and residents have been creating their own scarecrows, and it just felt right to invite the community to join in too! I look forward to seeing them all standing proudly in our garden display’.

Ashworth Grange resident, June Stephenson, said, ‘I think it is fantastic that the team have come up with such a fun and creative idea to spread a little bit of joy around the community. The scarecrows are very good, and I have loved seeing them taking pride of place in our garden display ahead of the judging!’.

Home Manager, Paul Rowson, said, ‘I am delighted to see all the wonderful entries we have had already; many local school children have really put their all into creating the wacky characters which our residents love to look at. I know that there are plenty of creative people in the Dewsbury community who I am sure will help to create even more very eye catching scarecrows – I can’t wait to see them all!’
Ashworth Grange is accepting doorstep drops off’s until the last week of May. All postal entries can be sent to Collette Senior at Ashworth Grange Care Home, Ashworth Green, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, WF13 2SU.
