Una Hopkin from Launton Grange care home in Bicester felt ‘very lucky’ when she celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and friends.
Una was born in 1923 in West Ham, and grew up with her older sister, Dorothy. After being evacuated from her hometown during the war whilst she was at school, Una later became a civil servant in East London.
Una worked as a civil servant until 1952 until she married the love of her life, Llewelyn, in Essex and retired to start a family. They had two daughters, Gillian and Susan, who Una dedicated her life to taking care of.
In 2022, Una made the decision to move to Launton Grange care home. When Una’s 100th birthday finally arrived, Una’s daughter and staff at Launton Grange decorated the home with balloons and banners to surprise the birthday girl.
Una spent the morning opening cards and gifts from her family, friends, and the local community. Una said she couldn’t believe the ‘kindness of strangers.’ Una added,
‘I feel privileged and very lucky to celebrate my 100th birthday with everyone at Launton Grange. Everyone was so kind, and the day was very special’.
When asked what her advice to living a long and happy life would be, Una simply replied,
‘Be kind to each other.’

‘We feel honoured to be able to make Una’s 100th birthday one to remember. Una is such a special lady, and a very big part of our Launton Grange family – we couldn’t wait to give her the birthday celebration she so deserves.
