Launton Grange Care Home Resident Becomes ‘Bell’ of the Ball in Musical Reunion

83-year-old Rosemary Henson from Launton Grange care home became the ‘bell’ of the ball when the Launton Handbell Ringers came for a visit – a group of which she had been a member in 1967.

The Launton Handbell Ringers were founded in 1951. With over 250 bells, the oldest of which is 300 years old, the ensemble performs beautiful songs and melodies for local people.

Having been an enthusiastic member of the group in her late twenties, when Rosemary was asked by staff at Launton Grange what her ‘perfect day’ would look like, she said she wanted to see the Launton Handbell Ringers once again after over 50 years.

After hearing all about Rosemary’s passion, Launton Grange reached out to the Launton Handbell Ringers and invited them to perform in the care home.

Everyone enjoyed the sounds of the bells chiming in harmony, but no one more than Rosemary. As the performance drew to a close, the bell ringers invited Rosemary to join them. Rosemary said,

‘It felt absolutely wonderful to ring the bells again. My father used to play musical instruments and I always regretted not learning more myself.

‘When I joined the Launton Handbell Ringers in 1967, I felt a real sense of achievement. I was so impressed with them today and I really appreciated being invited to play again!’

Zoe Spillane, the Home Manager at Launton Grange, added, ‘Our residents’ dreams and passions are extremely important to us; we want to give them as many ‘perfect days’ as we can!

‘Rosemary’s face was so full of joy when she started ringing the bells again, and to watch such a wonderful memory being made was an honour.’

You can meet the residents and staff at Launton Grange at their weekly over 65’s Afternoon Tea, every Sunday from 2:30. The Afternoon Tea is free of charge, but reservations are essential.
