‘I’m Determined Not to Let Parkinson’s Disease Rule My Life’

75-year-old Christine Lawton from Elworth Grange care home lives with Parkinson’s Disease and wants to encourage others to ‘stay positive and informed’ after staff accompanied her to local exercise therapy groups.

Christine first attended a weekly bike therapy class at the Lifestyle Centre in Crewe and said,

‘I’m determined not to let Parkinson’s rule my life. Now, on return from my exercise therapy sessions, I feel invigorated, and I have a more positive outlook. I feel that my physical fitness and my mental wellbeing are greatly improved.’

Soon after, Christine decided to try boxing therapy at Holmes Chapel Boxing Club.

According to Parkinsons UK, boxing therapy for those living with Parkinsons has been shown to improve strength, coordination, posture, stability, balance, and agility.

Rachel McIntosh, the Home Manager at Elworth Grange, said, ‘It’s been inspiring to see Christine push herself during her exercise therapy sessions.

‘At Elworth Grange, it’s important to us to support our residents in reaching their goals, so to have local facilities and services like those at the Lifestyle Centre and Holmes Chapel Boxing Club is invaluable.’

Christine added, ‘To others living with Parkinson’s Disease, I would say stay positive and informed. Exercise is important, join a local Parkinson’s group and talk to others about how you are feeling.’
