87-year-old ex-engineer, Raphael ‘Ray’ Elias, was welcomed to brand-new luxury care home, Coopers Croft in Stoke-on-Trent recently, as the home’s first resident.
Born in India, Ray moved to Stoke-on-Trent in the 1960’s to pursue a career in engineering, working for Westwood, and Automotive Products in Leamington Spa before spending 22 years engineering for Wedgwood.
Ray moved to Coopers Croft in January for respite care, but soon decided to become a permanent resident after enjoying his time relaxing and taking part in the diverse activities programme activities. Ray said,
‘Living at Coopers Croft makes me feel safe. The staff here are very friendly and helpful, and I’m enjoying living here a lot.’
Alex Field, the Home Manager at Coopers Croft, said,
‘We are so happy to have opened the doors to our home, and it is a privilege to welcome Ray as our founding resident.
‘It was important for everyone in our team to make sure that Ray received a very warm welcome and felt settled in right away, and I think our small ribbon cutting ceremony really set the tone for how our team approach person centred care.
‘I look forward to welcoming more new residents over the next few months and creating lots of memories with our Coopers Croft family!’
Since moving into the home, the staff at Coopers Croft have helped Ray to reconnect with Rabbi Martin Morris from the Synagogue in Stoke-on-Trent where Ray used to worship.
Ray had been attending services virtually but voiced to the staff that he had missed visiting in person. He was delighted to see Rabbi Martin Morris and expressed his gratefulness to the staff for organising the visit. He now looks forward to welcoming new residents into the home.
