Redditch Care Home Join Family’s Search for Stem Cell Donor

Staff and residents from Millcroft care home in Redditch are offering their support to a local family, whose five-year-old daughter, Emilia, was recently diagnosed with aplastic anaemia.

Aplastic anaemia is a rare blood condition where your bone marrow cannot make new blood cells. Emilia is currently receiving short-term treatment, but the best way to treat her condition is through stem cell and bone marrow transplants.

When word reached Millcroft care home about Emilia’s search for a suitable donor, the staff and residents in the home were determined to help.

On Thursday 14th September from 10:00, all are invited to come along to Millcroft’s Open Day, where volunteers aged 17-55 will be able to sign up to a stem cell donor registry. Lyndsay Sard, the Home Manager at Millcroft, said,

‘When Emilia’s father, James, told us Emilia’s story, we knew we had to do all we could to help this sweet little girl.

As well as encouraging volunteers to come along and sign up to the donor registry, our team members will be cycling 310 miles on a static bike, the distance between our home and Edinburgh, to raise awareness of Emilia’s condition.

‘We hope as many people as possible join us in finding Emilia her life saving match.’

Emilia’s father, James, added, ‘We are lucky that Emilia’s illness was spotted quickly; she is now receiving some great treatment, but this will only help sustain her in the short term.

‘We are greatly appreciative of anyone who is willing to be tested to help Emilia and others like her with these devastating conditions.’
