Student Volunteers Learning ‘Important Life Skills’ at York Care Home

Two students from Applefields School in York, which offers secondary education to young adults with additional needs, have become regular volunteers at residential and dementia care home, Ebor Court.

Jessie Kay and Alicia Gurnell, who are both 16 years old, volunteered to help at Ebor Court serving hot drinks and cakes at the home’s Community Coffee Morning every Wednesday to gain valuable working life skills. Alicia said,

‘I enjoy talking to the residents each week and some even remind me of my own grandmother. Coming here every week is teaching me important life skills that I will need in the future, and I also like to learn about the different cakes.’

Jessie added, ‘I like coming here because it helps me with my communication and serving skills.’

70-year-old resident, Malcolm Smart, attends the Community Coffee Morning every week. He said,

‘The students are learning very important skills being here, I’m sure it will help them both in the future. I enjoy chatting to them every week, they are both doing a great job in the community cafe.’

The Community Coffee Morning, held every Wednesday at 10:00 in Ebor Court’s Coffee Shop, is free for all to attend.

Shane Talbot, the Home Manager at Ebor Court, said,

‘We’re so pleased to be able to welcome Jessie and Alicia into our home as part of the Ebor Court family. They’ve been doing a fantastic job serving at our coffee morning events, getting to know our residents and their families.

‘We’re sure both Jessie and Alicia have very bright futures, and they will always be welcome at Ebor Court.’
