Meltham care home ‘makes their mark’ with time capsule

Residents at Greenacres care home in Meltham recently made history when they buried a time capsule in the home’s grounds.

The residents thought it would be interesting to future generations to learn about some of the things that have made a big impact on them over the past few years.

They placed news headlines, photographs from their Jubilee celebrations, information about Greenacres and an unused Covid-19 lateral flow kit in an engraved metal capsule, and started digging!

Verity Taylor, the Home Manager at Greenacres, said,

‘It’s lovely to know that a little piece of our care home could be here for many years, and it was great to see the residents making their mark.’

As they buried the time capsule, the staff and residents discussed what they thought things might be like in the future. 91-year-old resident, Peter Armstrong, said,

‘It’d really good if it stays hidden for hundreds of years and then when it’s found everything will be really dated.

‘I wonder if they will still have newspapers in the future? It will be interesting to see what they make of the covid pandemic. I wonder if covid will still be around[KH1] ? ‘

Staff and residents hope that the capsule will be discovered in around 50 years’ time, close to the year 2070 or later.
