Handley House care home in York has been named a finalist in care home provider Ideal Carehomes’ annual Gardens in Bloom competition.
Gardens in Bloom aims to engage Ideal Carehomes’ teams, residents and the local community in creating wonderful outside spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Handley House was named the winner in the North Yorkshire region by the Gardens in Bloom judges, who were impressed by the brightly coloured flower beds and serene seating areas.
Regional Director at Ideal Carehomes and Gardens in Bloom judge, Debbie Campey, said, ‘The gardens at Handley House are absolutely amazing. It’s clear that everyone had a hand in creating this calming yet bright and bold space for everyone to sit and relax in.
‘To create something so beautiful is a huge achievement, so congratulations to all at Handley House.’
88-year-old resident and keen gardener, Kenneth Blackhurst, commented, ‘Myself and the other residents put together ideas of what we wanted our garden to look like.
The garden gradually built from there, but if it wasn’t for the help of staff, relatives and our local community, our vision would not have come true – it’s even more beautiful than we had envisioned!’
Charlie Parker, the Home Manager at Handley House, added, ‘It wasn’t about winning for us, it was about seeing our residents, relatives, staff, and local community come together to create this beautiful space.
That being said, winning has definitely been the icing on the cake and we are all over the moon with being placed first in our region.’
